I’m not a super “family” person. I love my family, but I have never had the desire to see them all the time. My husband on the other hand is super into his family. Having been together nearly ten years, I can say he’s changed my attitude somewhat on the matter.
Growing up a gay boy in a rural Indiana town wasn’t easy, but my family never once turned me away or made me feel unwelcome in my own home. We had fights, sure, what family doesn’t? But they have been supportive of me, even though the first few years after coming out was more of a “don’t ask, don’t tell” situation. Eighteen years after coming out, I can say that my family is fully supportive of me AND my husband.
My husband’s family is awesome. They have never been anything but supportive of him. They welcomed me into their family with open arms (literally…they are huggers).
I realize now that family is always there for you. They may not give you what you want, but they will give you what you need (cue the Rolling Stones).
Love your family. Tell them that you love them often.
